The Supreme Court handed business a powerful shield against consumer class actions Wednesday, April 27, 2011, ruling that state laws can't override contract clauses requiring customers to present complaints individually to a private arbitrator. In a 5-4 ruling, split along its usual conservative-liberal divide, the court held that a "national policy favoring arbitration" pre-empted California law intended to protect consumers from widespread fraud. This ruling will limit the American Consumer's protection widespread fraud.
The US Supreme court has ruled in favor of big business on every consumer issue since conservatives have dominated the court. The US Supreme Court has previously ruled that big business can make political donations without limit which in effect gives them votiing power over the American citizen. The Court also ruled that manufacturers could force retailers to sell their products at predetermined fixed prices which in effect would raise consumer prices as much as 50%.
The state of Michigan is moving to take over the Detroit school system with the potential of privatizing schools and turning over their management to big business. Michigan is one of a number os States that are trying to do the same thing. In essence, they are telling the American Citizen, we don't care that you elected your local school board, we don't care that those are your dollars that fund your schools; we're going to take over your school system and do whatever we want. |
