Organic what does that even mean?

Posted on April 16, 2015 by Plantlighting Hydroponics

Consumer demand for natural and organic products has increased. Consequently indoor gardening companies have taken notice. As a result producers now offer a wide range of nutrients, soil-less mixes, and other products made for growers growing organically! It can be hard to make a decision without spending hours and hours researching brands, ingredients, and production practices.

Allow us to spend the time doing the homework for  you! Because we have direct access to vendor representatives and manufacturers. We source information directly from them to make sure we know exactly what we are selling. Here’s some insight into some products that are organic or environmentally friendly.

Organic Vs. Mineral

First lets talk about what makes an fertilizer organic. Most all organic fertilizers are going to made from carbon sources. While mineral nutrients which are typically salts, are either mined or manufactured. Most organic nutrients rely on beneficial fungi and bacteria to break them down. After they are broken down they become available for the plants to uptake. This is different than most mineral based fertilizers which are instantly available for plants to use. This makes it harder to burn plants with organic fertilizers. This topic is suitable for a whole post in itself. Let’s get back on track and talk about the types or organic fertilizers we offer.

Earth Juice

Hydro Organics has been manufacturing Earth Juice brand fertilizers since 1991. Their Earth Juice, Grow, Bloom and Microblast are the standard to which all other organic fertilizers are judged against. Although now offering a range of mineral and natural fertilizers their best selling products are still the originals.

General Organics

General Hydroponics offers a natural nutrient line under the General Organics branding. Although not certified General Organics, does use natural plant and animal based ingredients in their products.  BioThrive Grow and BioThrive Bloom are both vegan plant based supplements. If you prefer to not use animal based products the the Bio Thrive line would be for you.
